Late August Transitions

Hi Flower friends,

Fall may still feel a little ways off especially with these warm August days but in the garden, now is when we start thinking ahead.

Here at Florals@ Jackson, I’m already preparing for the next season: starting cool-season flowers, planning beds, and making room for the blooms that will carry us into fall and eventually early spring.

If you garden at home, this is a great time to start preparing too. Here are a few things you can do now in our Zone 8a garden:

Start Cool-Season Flowers Late summer is a great time to start thinking about flowers that actually prefer cooler weather. Snapdragons, stock, larkspur, bachelor buttons, nigella and other hardy annuals can all have a place in the fall garden.

Some will bloom in fall, while others can overwinter and reward you with beautiful early spring flowers.

Keep Cutting Summer Flowers. Don't give up on those zinnias, celosia and other summer favorites just yet! Continue cutting flowers regularly and removing spent blooms. Keeping plants harvested and deadheaded encourages them to continue producing as we head toward fall.

Think About Your Fall Color Palette Practice One of my favorite parts of seasonal gardening is watching the colors change. As we move toward fall, I'm drawn to warmer shades golden yellows, rust, burgundy, peach and deeper pinks. Even a few strategically chosen flowers can completely change the feel of your garden for the season.

As summer crops finish, don't immediately fill every empty space. It's a great opportunity to pull tired plants, remove weeds and replenish your beds with good organic matter before planting your next crop.

And Don't Rush to Clean Everything Up

A perfectly tidy garden isn't always the best garden.

Leaving some seed heads and plant material can provide food and shelter for birds, beneficial insects and other garden visitors. I like finding that balance between preparing for the next season and allowing the garden to do what nature intended.
